The maiden and her child come across a home in the woods. She knocks on the door and a woman in white appears, and upon recognizing her, bids her to enter. The handless maiden asks how she knows who she is, and she answers “The people of the wood know these things.’’ She and her child stay at the home of the woodspeople for seven years. During this time, her hands grow back: first as baby hands, then adolescent hands, and then the hands of a woman. This process begins after she puts the silver prosthetic hands the king made her into a box.
