These works were painted during my residency at Gibraltar Point, following my return from Iceland. They trace the stages in Freya’s life, the Goddess of Love and Lady of Fire, and her companion, the boar Hildisvin. In Norse mythology, Freya’s senses extend fifteen miles from herself, her worshippers, sacred sites, and any place where her name or titles are spoken. She reigns over Fólkvangr, her celestial field, where she welcomes half of those who fall in battle. I chose to install the paintings in a field on the island, inviting viewers to journey through the stages of her life as a kind of pilgrimage, documented on video.
